The Committee for Better Transit
(CBT) announces the
inauguration of its website for its ROUTES 2 Better Serve Southern
Brooklyn, a comprehensive set of bus service improvements. The
site can be found at brooklynbus.tripod.com
The site is being announced on the 25th anniversary of the largest single change to Brooklyn's bus routes which were made as a result of a study initiated by the Department of City Planning called ROUTES. That study resulted in the creation, combination, modification or elimination of ten bus routes in southwest Brooklyn on November 12, 1978. Unfortunately, the Transit Authority has since returned to the practice of studying bus routes one or two at a time with the emphasis on cost-cutting rather than continuing with the comprehensive approach and emphasizing service improvements. CBT has picked up where City Planning left off. Our proposals are designed to make bus service more, efficient, convenient and reliable by taking underutilized routes and making them more productive by rerouting and extending them to major traffic generators, providing improved connections and filling service gaps. They also eliminate unnecessary routing complexities, thereby simplifying the system to encourage ridership while still being cost effective.
