(proposed) Rockaway Subcommittee Mission Statement

The purpose of the Regional Rail Working Group is to develop and advance plans for converting the region's commuter rail lines into a regional rail system, with fast, frequent service and affordable, integrated fares. The purpose of the Rockaway Subcommittee is to work in conjunction with the Regional Rail Working Group to advocate for the reactivation of the unused LIRR Rockaway Beach Line, which passes through the communities of Rego Park, Ozone Park Woodhaven Howard Beach and the Rockaways. With the advent of the AIRTRAIN as well as the huge growth in housing in the above mentioned neighborhoods our group believes that the time has come for these unused LIRR tracks to be utilized again to provide a joint LIRR/Subway/Airport service to carry both Airport passengers and everyday commuters into Lower Manhattan via a connection to the Atlantic Branch of the LIRR via the Atlantic Avenue Cutoff in Ozone Park as well as also provide an additional joint LIRR/Subway/Airport service into Midtown, Manhattan via the now abandoned Rockaway Beach ROW which connects into the Main Line of the LIRR at Whitepot Junction.
