Carl,
Why retain the Second Avenue terminal? Why not extend the V over
the Williamsburg Bridge along the J line? To Broadway Junction
(Eastern Pkwy) or Canarsie (Rockaway Pkwy), or Crescent Street (with a
zone express type operation), etc.? Run it with 8 60 foot cars
instead of 8 75 foot cars.

Chris,
While reviewing the Queens Transportation Inititive
Group's Proposal for the "K Line I realize threre could be another
available subway alternative which would also involve utilizing the
"Old Rockaway Spur" from Rego Park to the Aqueduct Station in
Ozone Park. Instead of starting a new subway line called the
"K" Line the "R" Subway Line could be rerouted so
that it would no longer stop at the 67th Avenue Station and 71st Avenue
Station but instead travel to the Rockaways via the planned "Old
Rockaway Connection" at Rego Park. This would provide direct
subway service between the Rockaways and Midtown, Manhattan without the
added expense of starting another subway line but only a smaller cost
increase by extending the "R" Line from Rego Park to the
Rockaways which would also
incrporate the replacing the current Rockaway Park Shuttle with
"R" Line service. To address any concerns one might have
about having one less subway train serving the 67th Avenue Station it
should be noted that the 67th Avenue Station is one of the least utilized
subway stations along the Queens Blvd. Line since there are no major
crosstown buses serving that station and no major shopping malls at this
station as well. To address the concerns about one less subway train
serving the 71st Avenue/ Continental Avenue Forest Hills Station it
should be noted that this station would still have three major subway
lines still serving it ("V" "E" & "F")
so no one would be negatively effected at that station either. Stops
along the new "R" Line could be placed at:
-Beach 116th St =AD Rockaway Park
-Beach 105 Street - Seaside
-Beach 98 Street - (Playland)
-Beach 90 Street - Holland
-Broad Channel
-Howard Beach /JFK
-Aqueduct (Transfer to "A" and/or "A Diamond" or
"C" Lines)
-100th Street/101st Avenue-103rd Avenue (Old LIRR Ozone Park
Station.)
-100th Street/Atlantic Avenue (Old elevated LIRR Woodhaven Junction
Station)
-100th Street/Jamaica Avenue (LIRR Brooklyn Manor Station-transfer to the
"J" Line at 102nd Street)
-Union Turnpike (Stop & Shop Mall - Crescent Apartments)
-Metropolitan Avenue (site of Parkside Station)
-Yellowstone Blvd/Forest Hills
- 63rd Drive/Rego Park Station (Transfer to "V" Line)
- Woodhaven Blvd
- Grand Ave
- Elmhurst Ave
- 74th Street/Roosevelt Avenue - Jackson Heights (Transfer to the
"7" "E" "F" and "V" Lines).
West of this point all regular "R" Line stops to Bay Ridge,
Brooklyn.
Another similar option would be to instead reroute the "V" Line
so that it would no longer stop at the 67th Avenue Station and 71st
Avenue Station but instead travel to the Rockaways via the planned
"Old Rockaway Connection" at Rego Park. This would also provide
direct subway service between the Rockaways and Midtown, Manhattan
without the added expense of starting another subway line but only a
smaller cost increase by extending the "V" Line from Rego Park
to the Rockaways which would also incrporate the replacing the current
Rockaway Park Shuttle with "V" Line service. Again to address
any concerns one might have about having one less subway train serving
the 67th Avenue Station it should be noted that the 67th Avenue Station
is one of the least utilized subway stations along the
Queens Blvd. Line since there are no major crosstown buses serving that
station and no major shopping malls at this station as well. Again to
address the concerns about one less subway train serving the 71st Avenue/
Continental Avenue Forest Hills Station it should be noted that this
station would still have three major subway lines still serving it
("R" "E" & "F") so no one would be
negatively effected at that station either. Stops along the new
"V" Line could be placed at:
-Beach 116th St =AD Rockaway Park
-Beach 105 Street - Seaside
-Beach 98 Street - (Playland)
-Beach 90 Street - Holland
-Broad Channel
-Howard Beach /JFK
-Aqueduct (Transfer to "A" and/or "A Diamond" or
"C" Lines)
-100th Street/101st Avenue-103rd Avenue (Old LIRR Ozone Park
Station.)
-100th Street/Atlantic Avenue (Old elevated LIRR Woodhaven Junction
Station)
-100th Street/Jamaica Avenue (LIRR Brooklyn Manor Station-transfer to the
"J" Line at 102nd Street)
-Union Turnpike (Stop & Shop Mall - Crescent Apartments)
-Metropolitan Avenue (site of Parkside Station)
-Yellowstone Blvd/Forest Hills
- 63rd Drive/Rego Park Station (Transfer to "R" Line)
- Woodhaven Blvd
- Grand Ave
- Elmhurst Ave
- 74th Street/Roosevelt Avenue - Jackson Heights (Transfer to the
"7" "E" "F" and "R" Lines).
West of this pointall regular "V" Line stops to Second Avenue,
Manhattan.
Please add these two additional transit options to the Lower Manhattan-
Jamaica/JFK Study.
Sincerely,
Carl Perrera
